Introduction from the Principal

Introduction from the Principal summarising the core principles of the school and our journey so far

Overview

At Stone Soup, the timetable we offer each student is tailored to their personal interests and abilities. All students study maths and English at GCSE and Functional Skills level, (with Year 10 also studying GCSE Literature) and are then able to choose from a number of additional subjects. In these, they will work towards nationally recognised qualifications. In addition to this, we offer students the opportunity to broaden their experience with a range of short courses and enrichment.

Functional Skills

Functional skills are practical skills in English and Maths. They are a set of qualifications available to all learners aged 14 and above. Having the ability to use English and Maths skills in practical contexts to suit different situations means that Functional Skills underpin every single aspect of learning, work and life.

What’s more, employers are crying out for workers with sound Functional Skills as they are essential skills that are genuinely in demand. With good Functional Skills our students will have the ability to draw on a bank of transferable skills to help them succeed in all areas of life.

Each Functional Skills qualification is worth 23 attainment points at Level 2, making Functional Skills at Level 2 the equivalent of a GCSE. Strong English and Mathematics skills are essential in almost every workplace so Functional Skills qualifications are the ideal way to build learners’ work-related skills.

At the Stone Soup Academy we embed functional skills into the vocational subjects, as well as teaching an hourly session every day. The teaching styles and techniques used engage the learners through practical activities while also relating them to everyday situations or problems they may encounter in the outside world.
